Dr Yi Yuen (Ian) Wang
MBBS MD FRACS Director, One Brain and Spine Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon
Dr Yi Yuen (Ian) Wang is a highly experienced Melbourne-based neurosurgeon with over two decades of expertise in minimally invasive neurosurgery, endoscopic skull base surgery, complex endoscopic spinal surgery and advanced spinal techniques.
Specialisation and Skills
Dr Wang is widely recognised for his subspecialty expertise in endoscopic pituitary and anterior skull base surgery, as well as minimally invasive spinal techniques. He utilises the latest neurosurgical technologies, including the neuro-endoscope, cranial frameless stereotactic systems, and advanced spinal navigation, to deliver precise, minimally invasive treatment. He is an internationally recognised educator and lead proctor surgeon for endoscopic spine and prone transpsoas (PTP) techniques in Australia. He is a pioneer in awake spinal surgery, offering this option for patients who might otherwise not be able to access life-changing surgery.
Education
Dr Wang graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1999 and commenced neurosurgical training in 2004, gaining broad experience across major Victorian centres before completing his training in 2009. He was awarded his Fellowship in Neurosurgery from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2010. During his training he completed a Postgraduate Diploma of Surgical Anatomy as well as a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne.
Fellowship and Research
Dr Wang undertook a Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Fellowship at Salford Royal Foundation Trust, Manchester, United Kingdom, where he developed advanced expertise in endoscopic pituitary and anterior skull base surgery, as well as minimally invasive spinal techniques. He is the inaugural Chair of the Endoscopic Spine Society of Australia, a past Chair of the Australian Pituitary Foundation (serving on the Board for over a decade), an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, and a Member of the St Vincent’s Hospital Academy of Surgeons. Dr Wang has an extensive international publication record and is frequently invited as a speaker and faculty member at international neurosurgery and spine conferences.
Clinical Philosophy and Approach to Care
Dr Wang’s practice is founded on the principle of primum non nocere — first, do no harm. He is dedicated to understanding the person behind the condition, not just the diagnosis, and to providing patient-centred care that prioritises both clinical outcomes and quality of life. In turn this leads to highly individualised care with the goal to allow patients to regain a quality of life that they yearn for.
He takes a considered approach to both surgical and non-surgical management, ensuring that patients are fully informed and supported throughout their journey. His longstanding commitment to minimally invasive techniques reflects a broader philosophy of achieving optimal results with the least possible disruption to his patients’ lives.
