Dr Bryden Dawes

Specialisation and Skills

Dr Dawes has subspecialty expertise in cerebrovascular surgery, neuro-oncology, and skull base surgery. He manages a wide spectrum of complex neurological conditions, including brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), brain tumours, meningiomas, and acoustic neuromas. He is one of a select number of surgeons in Australia trained in cerebral bypass surgery—an advanced and highly specialised technique used in the treatment of complex cerebrovascular disease.

In addition, Dr Dawes has a strong focus on minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery. He utilises state-of-the-art technologies, including surgical navigation, robotics, and advanced spinal fusion techniques, to enhance precision, reduce recovery times, and improve patient outcomes.

Education

Dr Dawes completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours at Monash University in 2011. He undertook extensive neurosurgical training across leading centres in Melbourne and Sydney and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2020. During his training, he also completed a Master of Surgery at Macquarie University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Surgical Anatomy at the University of Melbourne, reflecting a strong commitment to academic excellence.

Fellowship and Research

Following completion of his Australian training, Dr Dawes undertook a prestigious cerebrovascular and skull base fellowship at the University of Texas, Houston, USA, developing advanced expertise in the management of complex cerebrovascular and brain tumour conditions. He has undertaken additional sub subspecialised minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery training in the United States, South Korea and Australia, ensuring his practice remains at the forefront of modern neurosurgical techniques.

Dr Dawes holds a public appointment at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. He is an active member of leading professional organisations, including the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.  He maintains a strong commitment to research and education, with particular interest in subarachnoid haemorrhage and minimally invasive spine surgery. He has an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals (link) and neurosurgical texts, and his work has been presented internationally. He is a dedicated to surgical educator, teaching neurosurgical registrars and training qualified surgeons in novel spinal fusion techniques.
